Dopamine Dressing For Your Mental Health

The idea of dressing to help boost your mood is nothing new. It’s called ‘Dopamine Dressing’. Also known as ‘Enclothed Cognition’ and ‘Joyful Dressing’.

It’s simply a shift towards clothing that’s bright, colorful, and downright joyful.

It’s the opposite of everything we wore at home the past three years. Think candy colors, neon hues, and prints that POP.

Dopamine Dressing: Fucshia + Lime Green color combo, Kermit Graphic T, Falsies,
LIPSTICK BOSS Lipstick & Bright Pink Earrings!

This association between brightly colored clothing and happiness is not new, the idea of injecting joy through what we wear is what I call ‘Dress Out Loud’ – and it’s what transformed my life.

I’m wearing the same three outfits on repeat. Seventy pounds overweight; nothing fits. I don’t like the way I look; I’m hiding in my house.

The crazy thing: I’m managing a ladies fashion boutique crammed full of colorful clothes & sparkly accessories, and I’m “Beige Betty” over here – feeling ugly, insecure + invisible.

So, I run away from home for five days, at 50 years old...

Little did I know, the dark season of going ‘unnoticed’ would soon be over for me thanks to dopamine dressing.

While I’m not promising that dopamine dressing can cure depression or anxiety, dressing in clothes that complement your coloring, body type and personality can certainly give you a much-needed emotional boost and it’s a great place to start!

Three Things You Need to Know About Dopamine Dressing

There is a slight art to following this movement, so I wanted to share three things you need to know when playing around with dopamine dressing.

#1. Use Color Theory/A Color Wheel

Use Color Theory/A Color Wheel to help decide what color combinations you want to try together. How colors mix, match or contrast with each other will determine how well your look comes together.

#2. Ease Into it With Accessories

Keep your foundational pieces (dress, top, or bottoms) in a neutral color and then layer in a pop of color with a boldly-colored handbag, shoes, jewelry, lipstick or even nail polish (I love press-on nails because they can instantly lift your whole mood)!

#3. Stick with Silhouettes That Flatter You

Then just step outside of your comfort zone when it comes to the pattern or color. Don’t go against your own style rules; still think about the colors (your Color Code™) and what shapes (your Body Type) are flattering on you.

I spent an entire year discovering and developing my personal image, purpose and potential; and as a result, God transformed my personal appearance, my mental and emotional health and restored my marriage.

Conclusion,

Fashion is meant to be fun and a form of self-expression, so next time you need a boost in your mood when getting dressed, try out the dopamine dressing movement to see how it makes you feel!

AS BELIEVERS, you and I are on a never-ending journey of becoming brighter and more beautiful – Christ-like beautiful.

Why I Used to Hate Networking {Hint: It’s My Weight}

{The irony that World Mental Health Day and National Curves Day  are on the same day – inspired this post}

QUESTION:  Have you said “No” to a networking event because you felt insecure?

According to a recent survey by Marshall’s Department Store, more than 70 percent of women say that they have said ‘No’ to a social event or activity due to low self confidence.

If I’m being brutally honest.

I used to hate networking because I was embarrassed about my weight.

I felt ashamed by my weight.

I tied my self worth & my success to my body image.

I decided that I’m not good enough or worthy of success.

If something went wrong in my day, no matter how big or small, I felt anxious, I felt depressed which then lead to self sabotage.

So for me, self sabotage looks like (not taking care of myself).

Eating through my emotions.

Not showing up.

Not moving my body.

All things related to my weight.

Let me tell you a story:

AS A YOUNG GIRL, I would sit on the edge of my mother’s bed and watch her get ready for “date night” with my father.

I was fascinated with her cherry red lipstick and watched carefully as she applied it to her lips, “shmeared” it on her cheeks, and then rubbed vigorously.  It was magical.

In Seventh Grade, I got permission to wear makeup to school.  I jumped on my yellow ten-speed “Peugot” bicycle; that my father crafted for me in the basement, and rode to the shopping mall.  I broke the 8th Commandment (Thou Shall Not Steal), and stole a blue eye shadow, mascara and bubble gum pink lipstick from the drug store, and wore it to school the next day.

I didn’t even make it to lunchtime.  The boys in my class were brutal.  They laughed at me and called me a “prostitute”.  One boy pinched my neck and left a mark; it looked like a hickey.

I was humiliated, embarrassed and ashamed.

I went to the nurse’s office to call my mom to come get me.  I broke Commandment #9 (Thou Shall Not Lie) and told my mom, “I had cramps”.

This was the first moment I can remember allowing someone else’s opinion of me make me feel ashamed of who I was!

This was a significant emotional experience that resulted in self harm, binge eating, anxiety and full blown panic attacks.

IN MY ADULT LIFE, I was told, on more than one occasion, that I had a “pretty face”, but I would be so much prettier if I lost weight.

I’m Pretty FAT.

(I’m okay with that)

I don’t know what you’re dealing with today.

Whatever it is – it’s real to you.

Here’s an empowering reminder to celebrate yourself from head to toe.

Because while you should love what you wear, loving yourself is always the most important thing.

I BELIEVE my journey as an entrepreneur and possibly yours too, would be so much more exciting,

so much more rich,

and impactful,

if we were able to accept ourselves just the way we are TODAY and not allow other people’s opinions of us keep us from happiness, abundance and our purpose on this planet!

I’VE COME A LONG WAY since my first makeup nightmare.  TODAY I help women create success through personal development and entrepreneurship.

I BELIEVE this message found it’s way to you at just the right time.

Maybe it’s time for you too – to look at that one struggle – that one challenge that you just know is holding you back.

In the mean time… I’m here for you.

Pretty FAT.

Kisses!

How To Layer Clothes for Fall: Avoid Looking Like a Bag Lady

When the temperature drops, it’s all about pumpkin spice and layering.

Layering your clothing is a tried and true way to maximize your comfort in the outdoors.

Layering is a technique.

BEWARE

“There is a fine line between layering and looking like the homeless woman who is wearing everything she owns!” (The Fashionating Life Formula: How to Build Your Self-Confidence)

The Biggest Mistake I see women making when they layer their clothes is looking bigger than they really are.

Here is the Secret to Layering:

Pick items that are varying lengths.

When your clothes are all the same length, they are going to look too puffy.

A jacket, sweater & shirt that are all different lengths will help you avoid this and create a much slimmer style.

Tell me… is your appearance important to you?  Are you projecting the look you want or are your clothes boring with no real sense of style?

Finally, How many times have you said “No” to an activity or social event due to low confidence?

How to Create a Vegan Breakfast Bowl (Recipe for Happiness)

This BREAKFAST BOWL has Super Foods and Super Powers!!!

“Several years ago, I was 70 pounds overweight, unhealthy, addicted to menthol cigarettes; suffering from hot flashes and depression.  I was unfulfilled in my job and unhappy in my 30 year marriage to my high school sweetheart.

At my lowest point I was inspired by a true story of a young, vegan girl.

I spent an entire year building a wardrobe that complements me; treating myself to beauty treatments; eating healthy; organizing my closet; simplifying my style and focusing on me.  As a result, I quit smoking, lost 50 pounds and gained self confidence.  I built a booming business and restored my marriage.

Today I eat to live, not live to eat.  I make food choices that nurture my body and my brain.  I’ve decided not to poison myself with the processed, packaged products.  Instead, I delight myself with colorful fruits and vegetables.”  -(Excerpts from The Fashionating Life Formula: How to Build your Self Confidence by Nancy Joseph)

How to Pick the Perfect Lipstick – Be Your Own Beauty Expert

Lip color is one of the most fun and accessible areas of makeup, and also one of the most noticeable.  From pretty and natural through classic and sophisticated to glamorous and vampish, how we makeup our lips can change our mood in an instant!

The right shade of lipstick can add to your attractiveness.  Bold, unnatural colored lipstick has the opposite effect.

Bubble Gum Pink?  Rock Star Red?  Nude Namaste? What is the perfect color for you?

When shopping for the perfect color, try lipstick on your fingertips – the skin there is most similar in color and texture to your lips and will give a fairly close representation of the effect.

Try it on your fingertips

Look in the mirror

and hold your finger up next to your mouth

Here are some other pointers:

  • Bare or Neutral colors look fantastic on everyone, especially for day (Just make sure it’s at least one shade darker than your skin)
  • Pinks warm up pale or older skin
  • Pale or glossy lipsticks make thin lips look fuller
  • Dark lipstick, especially harsh reds, is more aging than any other makeup choice
  • Choose lip liner that blends with your skin tone

Did this help you?  If so, I would greatly appreciate it if you commented below and shared on facebook.  Friends, don’t let their friends wear the wrong colored lipstick!

“Makeup is something everyone can master.  You can be your own makeup expert.  I’ve come a long way since my first makeup nightmare.  At 40, I taught myself how to do makeup and then I got my license.  I immediately landed the dream job of a makeup artist, with a national brand (it rhymes with “black”); I was the store manager – teaching and training women (and a few fabulous men), how to apply makeup based on their unique beauty.  I worked there for 5 years.  Then, I opened a makeup studio and spa – offering skin & airbrush makeup services for brides, fashion shows and photo shoots.  My favorite thing to do was teach and train everyday women how to take care of their skin and apply their makeup.  I even returned to the skin school that I graduated from and taught makeup to the students there for a couple of years…  Over the past twelve years – I’ve touched thousands of faces and shown them the power of makeup…  Follow my advice and you will have a better understanding of makeup and makeup products.  That knowledge will give you confidence about the makeup you choose to wear and how to apply it.” – Excerpts from The Fashionating Life Formula: How to Build Your Self Confidence, by Nancy Joseph.
