Why I Used to Hate Networking {Hint: It’s My Weight}

{The irony that World Mental Health Day and National Curves Day  are on the same day – inspired this post}

QUESTION:  Have you said “No” to a networking event because you felt insecure?

According to a recent survey by Marshall’s Department Store, more than 70 percent of women say that they have said ‘No’ to a social event or activity due to low self confidence.

If I’m being brutally honest.

I used to hate networking because I was embarrassed about my weight.

I felt ashamed by my weight.

I tied my self worth & my success to my body image.

I decided that I’m not good enough or worthy of success.

If something went wrong in my day, no matter how big or small, I felt anxious, I felt depressed which then lead to self sabotage.

So for me, self sabotage looks like (not taking care of myself).

Eating through my emotions.

Not showing up.

Not moving my body.

All things related to my weight.

Let me tell you a story:

AS A YOUNG GIRL, I would sit on the edge of my mother’s bed and watch her get ready for “date night” with my father.

I was fascinated with her cherry red lipstick and watched carefully as she applied it to her lips, “shmeared” it on her cheeks, and then rubbed vigorously.  It was magical.

In Seventh Grade, I got permission to wear makeup to school.  I jumped on my yellow ten-speed “Peugot” bicycle; that my father crafted for me in the basement, and rode to the shopping mall.  I broke the 8th Commandment (Thou Shall Not Steal), and stole a blue eye shadow, mascara and bubble gum pink lipstick from the drug store, and wore it to school the next day.

I didn’t even make it to lunchtime.  The boys in my class were brutal.  They laughed at me and called me a “prostitute”.  One boy pinched my neck and left a mark; it looked like a hickey.

I was humiliated, embarrassed and ashamed.

I went to the nurse’s office to call my mom to come get me.  I broke Commandment #9 (Thou Shall Not Lie) and told my mom, “I had cramps”.

This was the first moment I can remember allowing someone else’s opinion of me make me feel ashamed of who I was!

This was a significant emotional experience that resulted in self harm, binge eating, anxiety and full blown panic attacks.

IN MY ADULT LIFE, I was told, on more than one occasion, that I had a “pretty face”, but I would be so much prettier if I lost weight.

I’m Pretty FAT.

(I’m okay with that)

I don’t know what you’re dealing with today.

Whatever it is – it’s real to you.

Here’s an empowering reminder to celebrate yourself from head to toe.

Because while you should love what you wear, loving yourself is always the most important thing.

I BELIEVE my journey as an entrepreneur and possibly yours too, would be so much more exciting,

so much more rich,

and impactful,

if we were able to accept ourselves just the way we are TODAY and not allow other people’s opinions of us keep us from happiness, abundance and our purpose on this planet!

I’VE COME A LONG WAY since my first makeup nightmare.  TODAY I help women create success through personal development and entrepreneurship.

I BELIEVE this message found it’s way to you at just the right time.

Maybe it’s time for you too – to look at that one struggle – that one challenge that you just know is holding you back.

In the mean time… I’m here for you.

Pretty FAT.

Kisses!

Business Card Mistakes That Hurt Your Brand

Do business cards really matter?

YES! YES! YES!

Your business cards are a useful tool  for personally connecting with prospects,

customers or clients,

fellow business owners and

promoting your brand in person.

Hey Lipstick Boss!

Here are 10 Business Card Mistakes You Might Be Making.

True Story:

Last week I was a vendor at a women’s networking showcase and I ran out of business cards.

I ended up writing my information on a cardboard drink coaster.

There’s a good chance I won’t be hired by THAT person!

That night I ordered new business cards.

Here’s how to boost your connections with business cards:

Your business card is the first touch point  between your company and your potential clients.

With hundreds of people handing out business cards at a networking event, a great business card can help you ATTRACT your ideal clients, instantly!

Let’s make sure yours isn’t making any of these mistakes.

10 Business Card Mistakes You Might Be Making

  1. Small font size.  Don’t lose business because your information doesn’t STAND OUT.
  2. Glossy paper.  Not good for writing notes on – which most people do.
  3. Light font color.  Make it easy for your clients to read your information.
  4. Design inconsistent with website.  Consistency helps clients recognize you.
  5. No links to social media site.  Clients need to know where they can find you.
  6. No email or web address.  Just a phone #.  What if I’m not ready to talk live yet?
  7. No lead magnet.  Build your list with a FREEBIE.
  8. Includes no logo or photo. Branding strategy. (See #4)
  9. Includes no brand promise or tag line.
  10. Does not use back of card. Prime real estate! (Great place for #7)

Your business cards are a valuable tool.  Carry them with you at all times!

How to Build Your Bridal Makeup Kit {Checklist}

Would you LOVE to be booked months in advance for Brides?

The big secret is: It’s all in the kit!

Build it with PROFESSIONAL MAKEUP.

Achieving a flawless beauty look for your Bride starts with what kind of makeup you use.

Use Professional grade makeup products.

Why Professional?

Would a skin care professional perform a facial with something she purchased from a drug or department store?

Don’t use makeup anyone can access or apply.

Because using exclusive products makes your work more desirable to clients, I’ve put together a list of 13 PRODUCTS that SHOULD be in your KIT.

 BOOKED-SOLID!

PROFESSIONAL  MAKEUP KIT CHECKLIST

  1. MOISTURIZER – Hydrate her skin to improve appearance of skin texture and tone.
  2. FOUNDATION – Liquid or airbrush that gives the most “natural” finishes.
  3. PRIMER – Helps makeup stay put from first looks to evening reception.
  4. CONCEALER – Hide pimples, dark spots & cover under eye circles from rehearsal dinner.
  5. MAKEUP SPONGE – Game changer!  Her skin will look like those flawless Instagram filters!
  6. BLUSH &
  7. BRONZER – Delivers a natural looking flush of color with the perfect bridal bronze ‘glow’.
  8. MASCARA – An absolute necessity in your makeup kit!  (Don’t forget those spoolies)
  9. EYELINER – Defines eyes and makes them “POP” (opt for Dk. Brown)
  10. EYE SHADOW PALETTE – Aim for a natural eye look, combining shimmery champagne and soft pinks & matte browns.
  11. LIPSTICK – The finishing touch to the makeup look.  The 4 must have shades are: nude, brown, pink, red.

How Much Should I Charge for Wedding Makeup?

Hey Lipstick Boss!

The question I get asked the most by Bridal Makeup Artists is “How much should I charge for wedding makeup?

Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, reportedly spent over $13,000 for hair and makeup on her wedding day.

The Bridal Beauty Industry is a Billion Dollar Industry – You deserve your piece of the pie!

Here is the “industry average” for traditional bridal makeup applications:

For the BRIDE, rates range from $85-$125, depending on the complexity of the makeup application.

BRIDESMAIDS have a lower cost than the bride and can average between $50 and $100.

In addition to the initial wedding makeup, sometimes BRIDES request that you remain on-site to provide touch-up services.

(I offer a set rate for FULL-DAY services.  For example, $50 per hour after the initial application costs.)

What about TRIALS, TRAVEL EXPENSES & TOUCH UP SERVICES?

Trials, travel expenses and Touch-up services are in addition to the wedding makeup application.

NOW I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU….

The #1 Reason You Need a Signature Look

What you wear can influence your chances of business success.

Here’s Why You Need a Signature Look…

…Your Signature Look will affect your brand as perceived by others,

But,

More Importantly,

It will MAKE YOU MORE PRODUCTIVE!

  • You feel fulfilled and happy
  • You’re able to reach your goals and dreams – because productivity means that things that seemed impossible in the past are happening!

Designing a Signature Look is a very creative process that expresses your personality and suits your lifestyle.

Here are The Five Components of a Signature Look.

I. (Impact with color) – wear colors that make you look and feel younger – AVOID colors that cause you to look tired and your skin blotchy.

M. (Master your fit) – wear clothes that fit your body silhouette and proportion – AVOID clothes that cause you to look bigger and just add pounds.

A. (Add Accessories) – wear accessories that harmonize with your personal style – AVOID wearing too many accessories and looking like a fashion victim.

G. (Glam it up!) (Hair & Makeup) – wear a hairstyle that flatters your face shape & makeup that enhances your beauty – AVOID outdated styles and looks.

E. (Eat Clean & Exercise) – Learn to love your body and then make it BETTER! – KNOW your body type and its guidelines. Not every style suits every body type.

Bottom Line – Your clothes influence your performance.

How to Narrow Your Niche – The Perfect Elevator Pitch

Are you tired of being the best kept secret?

Have you ever had a friend, or someone from your networking group give a referral to someone else because they didn’t realize EXACTLY what you do?

Ouch!

When I first started going to networking events and giving my 30 second (elevator speech), I sounded like a drunk cowboy.

I uhhhhh… my name is…. ummmm, I help anybody….”

Honestly, the most painful 30 seconds of the day. (for me and I’m sure, for my audience)

Listen…I WANT to be my own boss.  I WANT to help people.

After all, I’ve got tons of credentials, mad skills and a bubbly personality! ! !

I feel like EVERYBODY could benefit from my products and/or my services.

My problem… I was marketing to the masses, and it wasn’t until I narrowed my niche that I found my perfect clients, my confidence and constant cash flow!

So next time you are at a networking event, talking to a stranger in the grocery line (prospecting at Publix), or at a party and someone asks you, “What do you do?”,

Do This.

Say, ” Hi, My name is _________________(say it sllllooowly),

I help __________(specifically WHO you help),

_____________________(exactly WHAT you help them do)!

That’s it.

Nothing more. Nothing less.

Wait for their Reaction, Comment or Question.

Your Perfect Clients will Self-Select and your friends will know exactly what you do and they will be excited to give you referrals!
