I Woke Up with a Droopy Eyelid and Almost Quit my Beauty Business

A Midlife Lesson on Self-Care, Confidence, and Not Believing Everything You See in the Mirror

Last week, I woke up in a Disney hotel room, looked in the mirror, and immediately diagnosed myself with the end of my beauty career.

I wish I were kidding.

One look at my reflection and I thought, “Well Nancy, it was a good run.”

My eyelid was droopier than usual.

My skin looked tired. My eyes looked puffy…

The Florida sun, long days, too much fun, not enough sleep, and maybe a few vacation drinks had all joined forces against me.

And there I stood, a licensed esthetician, makeup artist, and beauty coach, staring at myself and wondering if it was finally time to shut the whole thing down.

Dramatic? Absolutely.

Relatable? I think so.

Because if you’re a woman over 50, you’ve probably done the exact same thing.

One bad photo. One new wrinkle. One stubborn chin hair. One pair of jeans that suddenly feels tighter; or one morning when your hair won’t cooperate…

And before you know it, you’ve turned a temporary problem into a permanent identity.

I certainly did.

The funny thing is, nothing was actually wrong with me.

I was tired. I was dehydrated. I’d spent days in the sun.

I’d been making memories with my grandson.

I’d been laughing, walking, swimming, staying up too late, and squeezing every drop of fun out of our Disney vacation.

In other words, I looked exactly like someone who had been living her life.

But in that moment, I didn’t see any of that.

All I could see was one droopy eyelid.

Isn’t it amazing how quickly we can reduce ourselves to the thing we don’t like?

We can spend years building a business, raising a family, growing in our faith, overcoming challenges, helping others, and creating a beautiful life…

Then one morning we look in the mirror and decide our worth is tied to a wrinkle, a number on the scale, or an eyelid that looks like a deflated Birthday balloon. Yikes!

The older I get, the more I realize that self-care isn’t vanity.

It’s stewardship.

It’s getting enough sleep, drinking water, wearing (mineral) sunscreen, taking care of our bodies…

But it’s also taking care of our thoughts.

Because sometimes the harshest thing we’re facing isn’t what we see in the mirror—it’s the story we’re telling ourselves about what we see.

By the next day, after some rest, a vanilla latte, and a hydrating face mask, my eyelid looked much better.

But the real problem had never been my eyelid.

It was how quickly I allowed one imperfect thing to define everything else.

Maybe you’ve been there too.

Maybe it wasn’t an eyelid.

Maybe it was a wrinkle, a birthday, a number on the scale, or a glance in the mirror that made you question your confidence.

If so, here’s your reminder:

I used to think confidence came from always looking put together.

Now I think it comes from knowing who you are even on the days you don’t.

That’s part of why I created the Beauty Blueprint – to remind women over 50 that they’re still here, still vibrant, and still worth showing up for. Grab your FREE copy below.

You are more than the thing you’re criticizing today.
